`Playground Studies`
`There are kids out in the yard, playing and swinging and rolling and fighting. They communicate with each other through this interaction and in their body language; through touch and distance and backs turned away. Someone`s mad, someone`s laughing, and that one is just forlorn.`
"I have been exploring the immediacy of play - in particular the games children create, the abandonment of inhibitions, and the freedom to express emotion. I am interested in capturing the essence of the relationships between the figures, both spatial and psychological, which are manifested during these games. Removed from any context, children tumble into the canvas as they wrestle to the floor and swing into view from beyond the frame, compelling the imagination to accentuate and extend the experience beyond the canvas.
Alternately embracing the immediacy of the `sketch` and the emotion of the `gesture`, my work attempts to express these often spontaneous and charged moments. I try to place myself into the scene invoking these same feelings as I paint, translating this freedom of emotion into the image." Judith Geher
